EDITORIAL

J.L. Schwartz, M. Hayashi and D.H. Phillips

Readers of Mutagenesis will have noticed the changes to the team of Editors that took place in January 2002. These were occasioned by the retirement from the journal of its founding Editor, Professor Jim Parry. Jim was the driving force behind the formation of Mutagenesis in 1986 and has since steered it to its current pre-eminent position in the field of mutagenesis. We, the Editors for the Americas, Japan, Europe, and the Rest of the World respectively, take this opportunity to pay tribute to the outstanding leadership that Jim has given to the journal over the years of its existence.

The formation of Mutagenesis was a natural sequel to the major role played by Jim in the formation of the United Kingdom Environmental Mutagen Society in 1977, he served as its first President until 1980. Having established an independent Society, it seemed to him appropriate also, to initiate an independent Society Journal. From that starting point Mutagenesis has blossomed into an international journal that is among the leaders in the field, itself a testament to Jim's energy and commitment. This outstanding contribution has been recognised by the naming of Jim as the Founding Editor on the title page of Mutagenesis. We are delighted that he has accepted this title and that he has agreed to continue as a member of the Editorial Board.

We are committed to maintaining the high editorial standards set by the Founding Editor of Mutagenesis.
