It was a delight to go through the comments on our paper. We agree with most of the points raised by Dr Nersesyan. For our study the peripheral blood lymphocytes were collected from 34 multibacillary (MB) and 16 paucibacillary (PB) leprosy patients, who were under a multidrug therapy (MDT) regimen (Table 1) recommended by WHO, and subjected to cytogenetic studies and the Comet assay. In our study we did not observe any significant difference in the incidence of genetic damage between the two groups and so we did not segregate the types for the presentation.
Regarding the mechanism, in our paper we have clearly stated that the observed cytogenetic damage in lymphocytes of leprosy patients may be due to any or all of the mechanisms mentioned. As stated in our paper, the following studies are being conducted in our laboratory to clarify the possible role of infection.
- The effects of antileprotic drugs, with and without metabolic activation, on lymphocytes collected from normal and leprosy patients (MDT treated and untreated).
- Cytogenetic studies in untreated leprosy patients and their DNA repair capacity.
